Becoming an Advocate

There are 3 types of Advocacy:
  • Citizen Advocacy
  • Group Advocacy
  • Crisis Advocacy
You can give us as much or as little time as you wish, or have available. No matter how much time you spend as an Advocate it is important to be consistent. For example:
  • Citizen Advocates - some advocates meet their citizen advocacy partners for a few hours weekly, or fortnightly, or monthly
  • Group Advocates - groups normally take place for a few hours per month
  • Crisis Advocates - time spent on crisis advocacy varies depending on the issue
We are very aware that our advocates need ongoing support. Our coordinators will be on hand to give individual support at any time. They will also contact each citizen or group advocate at least once a month and crisis advocates more frequently to make sure that everything is going well.
Once you are happy that you want to apply to become an advocate, there are a number of steps to be taken:
  • You will need to complete an application form
  • You will need to undergo a CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check
  • You will need to show us one of:
    • your valid driving licence
    • your valid passport
    • your birth certificate
We will also need to see a recent utility bill. We will make copies of the documents and return the originals to you. You will need to supply the names of two people who will act as referees for you.
